Natural stone Amakusa porcelain cups, wheel thrown, hand-carved and hand-painted during Emily’s artist residency at Kouraku Kiln (Arita, Japan). The repetitive blue lines form a well-known Arita pattern, painted in traditional Gosu pigment. The design pays homage to the dedication of Arita craftspeople, as an apprentice painter would traditionally repeat this pattern thousands of times while learning their craft.

All cup measurements vary due to the nature of handmade objects.

approximate measurements: 65mm tall x 75mm wide at lip x 45mm base

Emily Kerr is a ceramic artist based on Ngunnawal Country in Canberra. She works with porcelain and stoneware clays, wood-firing whenever possible at Old Saint Lukes Studio in Gundaroo (Ian Jones and Moraig McKenna). In 2025 Emily completed an artist residency at Kouraku Kiln (Arita, Japan) where she focussed on porcelain surface decoration. Her recent work reflects this influence, and her growing interest in pattern design.
