"Urchin 1" by Melinda Capp is an exquisite hollow formed brooch. Capp has textured the front face of the brooch with small dots giving the surface bumpy feel. Six triangular forms meet in the center of the brooch and are joined at their points. The triangular forms are domed and descend into little valleys between. On the reverse side is the same form but without the textured dots. The two faces are connected at the ends of the valleys and the domed triangular sections remain open so that you can see into the internal hollow cavern. A double brooch pin is attached to the reverse side. To finish off the piece Capp has treated the silver to leave it white in appearance.

Materials: Sterling silver, stainless steel

Dimensions: 41mm x 39mm x 25mm

Melinda Capp is a practicing artist based in Naarm/Melbourne. She holds a BA (Honours) in Sculpture and an Advanced Diploma in Jewellery and Object Design. Her areas of exploration are seen through the lens of being an identical twin. Like the patterning on fingerprints and iris’s (expressions of difference in each twin) she is drawn to the unique patterns and forms in nature (particularly sea life) and also the built environment (industrial structures, architectural details and surfaces) in the urban area where she lives. Her work investigates the relationship between twinship, duplication and multiples, expressed through patterns and represented as sculptural structures that relate to and can be worn on the body.
